MY COLLEAGUES ARE GREAT AND THERE’S LOADS OF VARIETY!
Looking for an apprenticeship? British Gas offer smart metering apprenticeships up and down the country. Apprentices are trained to install and maintain ‘smart meters’ – special meters that help reduce energy bills – in people’s homes and workplaces. It’s a fun role that comes with its own van (!) and the option to earn a good wage while you learn. We caught up with smart metering apprentice, Ryan Scrutton, 26, to find our more…
I make people happy!
As a smart meter apprentice I sometimes get called out to ‘no gas’ situations – which is where a customer has lost their gas supply. Getting their supply working again – especially when it’s freezing outside – is a great feeling.
Every day I’m out and about handling gas and electricity – so I need to take my work seriously and be very safety conscious. It’s an important job with plenty of responsibility and I enjoy knowing that what I do makes a difference.
It’s a mixed bag
In a typical week I meet lots of of different people, and I really enjoy that – you never know who you’re going to meet next! As well as driving around visiting people people’s homes and offices, I do smart meter installs on newly built properties – so there’s plenty of variety and challenges in the role.
The team here are really supportive. Every week we have a team meeting where we meet up and discuss some of the scenarios we’ve come up against – and we discuss how best to deal with those situations in the future. We all get along really well.
The initial training period lasts 26 weeks and takes place at the British Gas Academy. If you don’t live locally then British Gas put you in a hotel – they really look after everyone! The training is brilliantly structured and gives great results. I had a great time doing my mine and felt fully prepared for my new role once I’d finished it.
