National Apprenticeship Week

National Apprenticeship Week 2014 has been the most successful ever

British Gas ran Open days as part of our Commitment to National Apprenticeship Week across all our academies in March and in Hamilton in Scotland in May 2014

National Apprenticeship Week 2014 has been the most successful ever, and here are some of the highlights:

The week was mentioned over 57,000 times on Twitter, including over 39,000 mentions of the campaign’s hashtag #NAW2014 trending three days in a row! The campaign received support from high profile tweeters including the Prime Minister, Mayor of London, Rio Ferdinand and Tim Campbell (the first winner of BBC’s “The Apprentice.”) Barbara Spicer, Chief Executive of the Skills Funding Agency said: “National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate the amazing achievements of apprentices and employers and to inspire more organisations and individuals to get involved.

A grand total of over 20,000 new Apprenticeships have been pledged by employers, an impressive 47% of which are being created by small and medium sized enterprises. “I’d like to personally thank everyone involved in making the Week such an incredible success, particularly the many small businesses that have come forward to make pledges, and hope they will continue to support Apprenticeships and Traineeships throughout the year.”

The Week began with a message of support from the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. The Deputy Prime Minister hosted a ‘Made by Apprentices’ reception at Admiralty House in London. This involved current and former apprentices from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing Industries attending and highlighted the talents of young female apprentices in particular.

For the final day of National Apprenticeship Week, the International Apprenticeships Conference was held at the Royal Opera House in London. The conference discussed global developments and opportunities that are arising for Apprenticeships in emerging markets and economies. National Apprenticeship week has given British Gas a valuable opportunity to talk to people about the fantastic opportunities we offer. We opened the doors to our Academies, and 248 people attended our Open Days.

This coincided with the launch of our Apprentice Gas Installation Engineer recruitment, which has generated a fantastic response so far. We look forward to bringing many new Apprentices into our business during 2014, and building on the success of National Apprenticeship Week
